The library was established together with the museum. The main part of the stock was collected by N. Shavrov. Most of the books have been gifted or donated to the library. Of note are the books presented by Emperor Nicholas II of Russia.

The library is composed of a reading hall and a catalogue room. Remarkable is the furniture made especially for the library in 1890-92 to the designs of Alexander Szymkiewicz, which preserve in original shape. Regrettably, the library lacks space for a storage, which it badly needs.
The library staff has started taking measures to enrich the library stock. Donation of books is strongly welcome.

The library intends establish networks with museums and university libraries, as well as other interested organizations within and outside Georgia.

Published in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries in twenty languages, the titles kept in the library deal with a variety of subjects, including sericulture, cloth manufacturing and procession, dyes and dying, natural sciences and economy.
In spring 2008, the library staff undertook to create a full catalogue of the collection according to the Dewey Decimal Classification. An electronic catalogue will classify books according to the author, topic, the country and year of publishing, a book format and other features.
The catalogue is expected to be completed in 2010. As a consequence, all interested readers, both in Georgia and abroad, will have an access to comprehensive information about the books and be able to use the library.

The library intends to collect video material relating to silk, its history and manufacturing. We are looking for scientific, educational and feature films about silk across the world.
